Our First Whale Sighting!!!

 Today was the best day EVER!!! First - because it was a busy day, and I didn't think the weather would end up being nice to go outside, but it was BEAUTIFUL!!!! Second- because we saw our first WHALE!!!!

Sadly, you don't get to see anything because my video doesn't capture it surfacing quick enough and then it was too far away. So you have to trust me that the ripples in the water are from a whale. As it got farther away and we could just see the fin, but we could totally hear and see it's water spout every time it surfaced. We weren't expecting to see them until spring, so it was so awesome. My seal, Seacil is a complete turd. We dance unsuccessfully almost every day. He peaks up at me, I grab my phone and then he evades me. I swear he knows exactly what he's doing and it's just a big game to him. One day, I will get a nice shot of his adorable face. At the moment, every picture I take just looks like a blob on the water. 

It was such a nice evening with no gnats or major wind that we decided to keep going. We headed out to the runway beach after we visited the dock. We had some of the island dogs follow us, and though I don't like dogs, they were quite hilarious. Brady was packing heat, but it wouldn't have mattered with how noisy these mutts were. One loved fetching the stick, but only from the water. He would just look at us if we threw it on land. The other was having a fight with flat shaped rocks! He was seriously missing some brains. Needless to say, it was a wonderful evening of some much needed fresh air. The outdoors truly can refresh and heal the soul.

 This weekend was pretty amazing! It began with the most beautiful full rainbow that a student spotted from the classroom. Of course, we went out and admired its beauty. We then had a special treat of the docking of the monthly ferry. Why is the monthly ferry the best part of the month? I am glad you asked. It's the only time we get to order and eat restaurant food!!!! They send an email out with a menu the week prior to their arrival. We email our order and pick it up when the ferry docks. Can I just say that fish and chips and bacon cheeseburgers have never tasted so good. The french fries were fabulous and the desserts were simply decadent. Because of COVID orders can only be to go, but pre-COVID you could order and eat on the boat. Maybe we'll be lucky and get to eat somewhere other than our apartment before this adventure ends.  Saturday evening just might have been the most exciting evening yet, because we were privileged to witness three bears out in the wild. Bush Plane Wild Ride

 Never have I ever remembered feeling closer to death than I did Friday afternoon. I really wanted to get my ankle looked at. It was still super painful and swollen. I felt like it should be at least 10% better after almost a week of staying off it, and keeping it up and iced.  Initially, the plane from False Pass to Anchorage for Friday was full, but when I called back Friday morning to see if someone had cancelled, I was in luck and thought it was a sign. While sitting at the runway waiting for the plane the winds started up and the clouds rolled in. Brady was visibly getting worried, and I was thinking "it's fine, they wouldn't fly if it wasn't."  I got on the plane and Chris, our very young, very cute pilot informed me that it would be about 5 hours before we arrived in Anchorage because we are making 5 more stops. Cherish Sunsets, Wild Creatures, and Wild Places

 I can't stop taking pictures, but we all know this is one of my character traits/flaws. I don't think taking too many pictures can be considered a flaw. It's all about trying to capture the moment.  I was extremely busy this week, but I made sure I got out and enjoyed the beautiful weather. We only had one indoor rainy day the whole week. That was pretty awesome. I am settling into the principal role, fielding the stress of starting the school year minus three teachers. I have a great team of teachers who is being really positive and absorbing the extra work.  I finished the last class I had procrastinated taking to keep my Alaska educators license. That was a relief, and I finished it with four days to spare. I need to stop procrastinating.  Monday the 7th was a very long day at the school. I met a lot of staff and started problem-solving the schedule being short three teachers. By the time my day was done I really needed some outside fresh air. I was way too tired...
